Knowledge of Asian culture was an attribute touted in the resume of a Calgary child molestor now accused of operating a pedophile ring in Thailand.

The sordid journey of 62-year-old John Wrenshall -- convicted in 1997 for sexually assaulting eight choir boys in Calgary -- ground to a screeching halt after his arrest Monday at London's Heathrow Airport.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials allege Wrenshall, founder of Calgary software firm Rinax Systems, ran a pedophile ring since 2000 in his home outside Bangkok, prompting an 18-count indictment comprising a slew of sex tourism and child-pornography charges.

"After early retirement from my software company, I developed my skills in teaching and have begun a second career as an English language and business teacher," wrote Wrenshall on his resume.

"Dedicated to the needs of my students, I understand the difficulties of learning a foreign language ... and possess a good knowledge of Asian cultures, especially Thai."

Wrenshall reportedly lost his business while settling civil suits launched by five people who alleged he molested them as minors.

Court documents say at least 20 boys as young as nine were allegedly assaulted by Wrenshall from 1961 to the mid-1980s.

Wrenshall's CV makes only passing mention of his work prior to 1998 -- the year he was released from a one-year prison term for molesting eight boys during a stint as scout master and choir member at the Anglican Cathedral Church of the Redeemer, 218 7 Ave. S.E.

Such abuses from a position of responsibility are disturbing, said Bishop Derek Hoskin of the Anglican diocese of Calgary.

"That's of great concern in the church and we have policies in place to respond to those sorts of situations and allegations, and take them very seriously," he said.

"We do require police checks for people who are going to be working with children and youth."

A relative of the accused declined comment when contacted yesterday at her Ontario residence.

"We have not been in contact with him in years," she said.

U.S. authorities allege Wrenshall's Thai business offered boys as young as six- years-old to sex travellers, who could videotape and photograph their abuses.

Wrenshall is currently being held in custody in London pending extradition to the U.S.

The case was spurred by Wayne Nelson Corliss, a New Jersey man who identified Wrenshell and two other people when he pleaded guilty in August to charges of international sex tourism.
