ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Hundreds of people have come forward, claiming past sexual abuse at the hands of former priests or lay volunteers with the Fairbanks Catholic Diocese.

Because the diocese is going through a bankruptcy, victims had to come forward by Dec. 2.

The diocese said 288 people have made abuse claims against more than 40 individuals, and most involve allegations of childhood abuse.

Ronnie Rosenberg, the diocese's human resources director, said nearly half of the claims are against one man, Joseph Lundowski.

Rosenberg said the goal of the bankruptcy is to compensate victims and continue to serve Catholics in northern Alaska.

A bankruptcy court will now work on negotiating any settlements.
