The former pastor of a Pleasant Township church escaped jail time but was labeled a sex offender today for possession of child pornography.

John W. Adams, 67, was caught downloading photos and videos of naked children at his North Linden home during a child-pornography investigation by Upper Arlington police in 2007.

He pleaded guilty to a felony charge of pandering obscenity in September.

He could have been sentenced to eight years in prison, but Judge Guy L. Reece of Franklin County Common Pleas Court placed him on probation for three years.

Reece ordered that Adams have no unsupervised contact with children and no access to the Internet or a computer.

Adams, who now lives in Ashville, must register as a sex offender in Pickaway County for the next 25 years and attend sex-offender counseling.

He is a former pastor of Mount Calvary Freewill Baptist Church on W. London-Groveport Road.

Defense attorney Paul Aucoin said Adams, who has been married for 27 years and has a heart condition, kept the viewing activity from his family and friends and was never a threat to children.

Reece said, "There is no allegation here that (the pornography) was transferred to someone else. But as a minister, you were placed in a position of super trust."
