Irish bishops refused to hand over information on child sex abuse allegations to an official investigation by health chiefs, it has been revealed.

Children's Minister Barry Andrews has vowed to pursue the Catholic Church for the details omitted from a Health Service Executive (HSE) national audit on compliance with child protection regulations two years ago. The inquiry was designed to benchmark the policies of dioceses around the country against guidelines set out in the Government's Ferns Report in 2005, which uncovered paedophile priests in Co Wexford.

Bishop of Cloyne John Magee later pledged to cooperate fully with the Commission of Investigation and again apologised to all victims of clerical sexual abuse. A statement from the Diocese said it had accepted the findings of the Health Service Executive (HSE) report into the handling of abuse allegations and had agreed action to boost child protection.
