LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A lawyer for jailed evangelist Tony Alamo has asked for more time to prepare his defense against federal charges of taking underage girls across state lines for sex.

John Wesley Hall Jr., of Little Rock, filed a motion Wednesday to continue Alamo's trial to an unspecified date. In the motion, Hall said state officials have been investigating the convicted tax evader since 2001. Hall questioned whether the statute of limitations has run out on several of the charges, as they go back to 1994.

Hall also said he is scheduled for jury duty in February, when Alamo's trial was planned to be held. Hall said in the motion that jury duty "should really be educational."

Alamo, 74, was arrested in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Sept. 25.
