Cardinal Sean Brady has said he believes Bishop John Magee should not resign over his handling of clerical child sexual abuse allegations in the Diocese of Cloyne.

John Magee
Cardinal said the bishop has learned a painful lesson

Cardinal Brady said there had been serious failures in Cloyne, but he said Bishop Magee had learned a painful lesson and was determined to put in place proper procedures for dealing with abuse victims.

Cardinal Brady said people had called for Bishop Magee's resignation because they were angry and victims' concerns must be heeded.

He had apologised and accepted responsibility for his failures and had introduced changes to ensure that proper procedures for dealing with clerical sex abuse allegations and child protection were implemented.

Cardinal Brady said Bishop Magee would do everything in his power to ensure that clerical abuse did not happen in his diocese again.
