PEORIA — A Catholic priest who formerly served parishes in Lincoln, Atlanta and Mason City has been asked to step down from public ministry after being accused of sexual misconduct with a minor.

Father Jerry Pilon allegedly participated in sexual acts with a minor nearly 12 years ago, according to a news release from the Catholic Diocese of Peoria.

The release did not indicate when the allegations were made. No one from the diocese returned a phone call Thursday seeking additional information. It was unclear whether Pilon faces any criminal charges.

The release stated that the sexual abuse did not occur in the Diocese of Peoria, and that the victim was not involved with Pilon in his ministerial capacity. Pilon has denied the allegations.

The diocese has asked Pilon not to function as a Catholic priest in any public capacity, to stop wearing clerical garb and to refrain from using the title Reverend or Father.

Pilon served at churches in Lincoln, Atlanta and Mason City from 1989 through 1991. From 1991 to 1992, he served at churches in Mendota and Peterstown. He was stationed at a church in Hoopeston from 1992 through 1998 and has since served at the St. Mary Church in Moline.
