CHARLESTON, SC (AP) - A rector from New York has been named the new bishop for South Carolina's statewide Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston.

The Vatican announced Saturday that Robert E. Guglielmone will lead the 183,000 Roman Catholics in the state. He has spent the past two years as rector at St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Center, NY

The 63-year-old Guglielmone will be ordained and installed as bishop March 25 at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Charleston.

Guglielmone was born in New York, and taught high school for five years before he entered the seminary. He was ordained in April 1978 and has spent his entire career in the state.

South Carolina has been without a bishop since October 2007 when Robert Baker left to become the Bishop of Birmingham in Alabama.
