Government begins process of selecting new commission

The frustration around the Truth and Reconciliation Commission continues, as its two commissioners have announced that they will resign as of June 1st.

The TRC, which is supposed to bring closure to Canada's residential schools legacy, has been without a chair since late October. And now the commissioners have also decided to step aside. All parties involved say it's for the best to allow the TRC a fresh start.

Indian Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl has laid out the next steps in the selection of a new Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

"We'll move ahead with a clean slate, we'll pick those new commissioners very quickly now, and look forward to the commission starting its work," Strahl says.

Justice Harry LaForme resigned as chair three months ago, while commissioners Jane Brewin Morley and Claudette Dumont-Smith have stepped aside to provide a fresh start in the process.

Strahl says the delays have lasted long enough.

"It's just time now to buckle down, get to work, get the new commissioners appointed, so we can get that work underway," he says.

A selection committee is now in place to choose the new chair and commissioners.
