According to an unnamed source, Pope Benedict XVI is getting to ready to announce the appointment of the new Archbishop of New York.

The article on Newsmax included several likely appointees, including Archbishop Dolan of Milwaukee and Archbishop Myers of Newark. I think both of these would be good appointments, and since they both stayed out of the limelight during the past election it could be a sign that they knew they were under consideration.

I always find that when a normally outspoken bishop grows quiet something is up, somewhere.

Another bishop being considered, according to the source, is Archbishop Roberto Gonzalez Nieves of San Juan, who is from New Jersey. Archbishop Nieves, who belongs to the Order of Friars Minor, was consecrated by Cardinal Law, still a powerful voice in the choosing of bishops. The late Cardinal O'Connor of New York assisted at the consecration.

This will be the most important appointment made by Benedict XVI in the United States. Let's pray that he chooses someone who will be a powerful advocate for life and family in the manner of Cardinal O'Connor. Cardinal Egan had his virtues, but doggedness was not one of them.
