VERACRUZ, MEXICO — A Catholic priest already accused of sexually abusing boys at a church-run residential facility in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz is to be charged with the rape of two girls, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Spokespersons for the state Attorney General's Office said that a second indictment has been handed down against the Rev. Jose de Jesus Sandoval Gonzalez, known as "Padre Chucho."

The priest has been in custody since Jan. 12 in connection with the original charges of molesting boys at the Manuel Pio Lopez home in Boca del Rio, a facility run by Sandoval.

Judge Beatriz Rivera Hernandez agreed to allow prosecutors to add the rape accusations, which come from girls at the Lopez home, to the existing case.

The priest's arrest followed a press conference by Boca del Rio's mayor to complain that prosecutors had failed to act on the criminal complaint his administration filed in mid-December over alleged sexual abuse at the Lopez facility.

Mayor Miguel Angel Yunes Marquez told reporters that the municipal government had received complaints from boys who said they were mistreated and subjected to sexual abuse by the priest with the connivance of Sister Maria Guadalupe Zaragoza Barajas.

According to Yunes, the mothers of two purported victims said the nun accepted payments of 500 pesos ($36.20) to take boys to Sandoval's house, where they were molested.
