The Rev. Daryl Bujak, found guilty today of two counts of battery for spanking a young girl brought to him for counseling for sexual abuse, leaves the Kane County Courthouse today.

A former Elgin pastor avoided jail time this afternoon for spanking a 12-year-old girl brought to him for counseling after she said she had been sexually abused.

A judge sentenced Daryl Bujak to 12 months of supervision, 80 hours of community service and ordered him to pay $350 in fines. He won't be allowed to have any contact with the girl and was also ordered not to have abusive contact with any minor.

Judge Allen Anderson earlier today found Bujak guilty of two counts of battery after a two-day bench trial in the Kane County Courthouse. Bujak was found not guilty of not reporting the sexual abuse.

During closing arguments, Bujak's attorney argued that the right to administer corporal punishment had been granted by the girl's mother.

Anderson rejected that reasoning, saying the right of "corporal punishment would not extend to a teacher who decided to improve the grades of a student by administering weekly spankings."

Bujak was charged with battery for allegedly spanking the girl with a piece of crown molding during counseling sessions in 2005.

The beatings occurred at First Missionary Baptist Church in Elgin, where Bujak was pastor. A church official said today that Bujak is no longer pastor at the church.

The parents of the girl -- she was then 12 years old -- took her to Bujak for counseling after the mother received a note from the girl that allegedly described sexual abuse by another man.

Authorities later arrested Matthew Resh of Ingleside on five counts of predatory criminal sexual assault. Resh awaits a trial in July.
