The new leader of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales is The Most Reverend Vincent Nichols, the 63-year-old Archbishop of Birmingham.

He will succeed Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor as Archbishop of Westminster. The cardinal, who stands down next month, will become the first man to retire from the post since the restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in th UK since the 1800s.

The BBC says Archbishop Nichols has been a leading figure in the church, fighting battles on education and adoption agencies. He also criticised Worcestershire plans to remove six hospital chaplains in a cost-cutting measure.

And he criticised a Panorama documentary entitled Sex and Crimes at the Vatican as a "false and misleading" attack on Pope Benedict XVI.
