An apostolic visitation of the Legionaries of Christ should consider all options, including disbanding the order, Archbishop Edwin O'Brien of Baltimore said in an interview with John Allen of the National Catholic Reporter. Archbishop O'Brien, who has criticized the Legionaries for a "lack of transparency," expressed doubt as to whether the religious order could survive the scandal involving its founder, the late Father Marcial Maciel. "I don't know of any religious orders founded by somebody like Maciel," he said; "or if they were, they didn't last very long."
