Mumbai: A 27-year-old priest was arrested by the Vakola police on Wednesday for allegedly molesting a 21-year-old girl on the pretext of ridding her of the "difficulties" she would face while pursuing higher studies.

Kirti Natrajan is a priest of the Bhakth Samaj temple near the Mathura Das society in Kalina, Santa Cruz (east). The girl, who completed her diploma in travel and tourism only recently, and her mother got acquainted with him during their frequent visits to the temple, the police said. One day he approached the girl's mother in the temple offering to study their horoscopes.

"The girl wanted to go abroad for further studies," assistant commissioner of police Arvind Mahabdi said. "She and her mother decided to show her horoscope to him. On April 4, they showed him her horoscope at the temple. Natrajan told them that she would face problems in her pursuit of higher studies and that a small puja would free her of the difficulties," Mahabdi said. He then told them to meet him again.

On Tuesday, the girl and her mother went to the temple to meet him. Not finding him there, they were returning home, when they saw him near their house, the police said.

Natrajan then told them that he could do the puja in their house. Once inside the house, Natrajan took the girl to a room and asked her mother to wait outside, the police said.

"Inside the room, he told the girl to remove her dress," a police officer, who is part of the investigation, said, requesting anonymity.

"He allegedly applied curd on her body and molested her. He also told her that she would not face any problems in her studies if this was done for five days," the officer said. "However, the next day, the girl told her mother about what Natrajan had done to her."
