One of the worst things about American Catholicism is its militia of feminist nuns, who long ago decided that the Magisterium was too restricting for them, and that if they couldn't be priests they could at least swan around like them, issuing bossy diktats about "being Church".

How satisfying, then, to learn that the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith is launching a "doctrinal assessment" of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), a stronghold of the finger-wagging, right-on sisterhood.

They're furious, of course! And so is the National Catholic Reporter, a weekly whingefest of "empowered" laity and their priest lackeys. Here is the NCR's report of Rome's decision.

Cardinal William Levada, Prefect of the CDF, has announced the assessment in the light of the sisters' insistence on challenging Church teaching on women priests, non-Catholic churches and homosexuality at their dreary conferences.

To give you a flavour of the LCWR, here's part of their mission statement: "Developing models for initiating and strengthening relationships with groups concerned with the needs of society, thereby maximizing the potential of the conference for effecting change." We're not talking Mother Teresa here, we really aren't.

Note the comments underneath the NCR report. "Ratzi the Nazi" begins one, predictably, while another says: "I get the feeling that Rome is going to nail Christ to the cross all over again."

Really? I get the feeling that Rome is going to ask its radical American nuns to be Catholics. I don't fancy its chances.
