Salinas, Calif. (AP) — Monterey Diocese Bishop Richard Garcia has told members of a Salinas parish to trust the justice system and God as the church comes to grips with the sexual molestation arrest of one of their priests.

Rev. Jose Alberto Vazquez-Martin read Garcia's letter to members of St. Mary of the Nativity Catholic Church during Mass on Sunday.

On Thursday, Father Antonio Cortes was arrested for investigation of unlawful sex with a teen boy and providing alcohol to a minor. The diocese suspended the 41-year-old Cortes from church duties.

Garcia wrote that children are "God's precious gift to us," and he asked everyone to cooperate with the Salinas Police Department, saying, "Trust the justice system and God."
