MEXICO CITY – Mexican police arrested seven accused pedophiles, one of them a priest, after the discovery of a kiddie-porn ring using the Internet, the capital district attorney's office said.

Without providing more details, the office said that one of the seven arrested people is a Catholic priest in Xalapa, capital of the Gulf coast state of Veracruz.

The investigation was begun last month when Mexico City prosecutors discovered an e-mail containing images in which presumed minors are shown being sexually abused.

The e-mail was traced to a person in the capital.

The Cybernetic Investigation Unit entered into a Web page linked with the e-mail and examined eight files "with ... scenes of explicit sex between adults and girls and boys from 0 to 10 years old," the DA's office said.

With this evidence, police arrested Luis Alejandro Vergara, 32, at his home, where they found a large amount of child pornography.

Vergara, who confessed to the crimes of rape and sexual abuse, was an employee of Mexico's foreign ministry, which said it would fully cooperate with the investigation.

Police established that Vergara had connections in five Mexican states.

Arrested in addition to Vergara were Miguel Angel Rodriguez Acosta of Hidalgo, Miguel Angel Sanchez Garcia of Puebla, Luis Abraham Portilla Ramirez of Aguascalientes, Edmundo Jesus Martinez Niņo of Yucatan and brothers Rafael and Francisco Muņiz Lopez, both of Veracruz. EFE
