NJ woman ordained as a priest in controversial ceremony

Mary Ann Schoettly of Fredon, Sussex County, says that she was ordained a Catholic priest at a special ceremony held Sunday, April 26, in Philadelphia. The Catholic Church disagrees wholeheartedly. Church officials say women can't be priests, and that Schoettly actually has actually been automatically excommunicated for her efforts. That claim does not matter to Schoettly, 66, who says the Church's ban on women priests is unjust. No Catholic church would host the event, so the group that oversaw it -- Roman Catholic Womenpriests -- held it at a Reconstructionist synagogue.
