A Catholic priest whose forced resignation over allegations of sexual misconduct with a 16-year-old girl was announced last week by the Archdiocese of Detroit will not face criminal charges, Clawson Police Chief Harry Anderson said Monday.

Anderson said that a Clawson detective spoke with the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office and was told there would be no charges filed against the Rev. Kenneth Kaucheck, 62, because the teen was of legal consent in 1976 when the alleged sexual relationship took place.

At the time, Kaucheck was a priest at the Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Clawson, where the girl had been sent to him for counseling.

Joe Kohn, spokesman for the archdiocese, said officials reported the allegations to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office in January after the woman reported them. The diocese is conducting its own investigation of Kaucheck, who had been serving at St. Mary in Royal Oak and St. James in Ferndale when he was removed.

The woman, a receptionist in a doctor's office, recognized Kaucheck earlier this year when he was at the office for an appointment, but he didn't recognize her, Elizabeth Sayraf, an Ann Arbor psychologist, told the Free Press.

Sayraf, who was interviewed by a diocesan investigator, said she was a 17-year-old volunteer receptionist at the Guardian Angels church in 1976 and often spoke with the 16-year-old girl when the girl was waiting to see Kaucheck for counseling.

At first, Sayraf said, she didn't believe the other teen when she talked about a sexual affair with Kaucheck. But when the girl showed her an airline ticket with her name and that of the priest as proof that they took a trip to Florida together, Sayraf said she reported it to a deacon at the church, who notified the senior priest. Later, a meeting was held with the girl's father, brother, Kaucheck and the senior priest.

There was "lots of screaming and yelling" coming from the office, Sayraf said.

After the meeting, Kaucheck got a new assignment at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dearborn, according to the archdiocese.
