Father John A. Skehan

WEST PALM BEACH — A former Delray Beach priest who pleaded guilty to stealing from his parish on Friday turned himself in to begin his prison sentence.

Father John A. Skehan last month was sentenced to 14 months in prison and seven years' probation after he pleaded guilty to grand theft over $100,000 from St. Vincent Ferrer in Delray Beach, were he served as pastor for more than 40 years.

According to Palm Beach County jail records, Skehan, 81, was booked into the Palm Beach County jail just before 1 p.m. Friday, the deadline day for him to turn himself in.

Skehan's successor at St. Vincent Ferrer, Father Francis Guinan, received a four-year prison sentence last month after a jury convicted him on related theft charges. Authorities say the two collectively misappropriated $8.6 million from their church.
