Asheboro, NC -- The congregation of First Congregational United Church of Christ voted to fire their pastor Sunday. The decision is effective immediately.

Raymond Reid, 34, had served as pastor for four or five years, according to Rev. Stephen Camp, southern conference minister for the United Church of Christ.

Last month, Reid was charged with statutory rape, sex offense with a student and indecent liberties with a child. The felony charges stem from allegations he engaged in a sexual act with a 14 year old girl in December 2006.

At the time, Reid was an unpaid baseball coach and a part time tutor at Southeastern Randolph Middle School. The girl was a student there.

Reid is currently a reading tutor at Southeastern. He has been suspended with pay.

Camp said the congregation of First Congregational United Church of Christ put Reid on leave with pay after he was charged.

The congregation makes all the decisions about hiring and firing within the church, Camp said.

Reid is on the board of the Asheboro branch of the Boys and Girls Club. Clarissa Flowers, CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater High Point, said last week that Reid is not an active member and has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

Repeated calls to an investigator with the Randolph County Sheriff's Office about this case have not been returned.
