Members of the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests delivered a letter Monday to the Archdiocese of Detroit that asked for greater accountability and openness when dealing with abuse cases, in light of the resignation of an Oakland County priest.

The archdiocese said in a statement that the letter was misleading and inaccurate in its claims.

The archdiocese announced last month the resignation of the Rev. Kenneth Kaucheck, 62, from St. Mary Catholic Church in Royal Oak and St. James Catholic Church in Ferndale. He resigned after allegations reported in January by a woman who said he engaged in sexual misconduct with her when she was a minor.

Barbara Blaine, president of the Chicago-based group known as SNAP, said the archdiocese took too long to act. The archdiocese said it immediately turned over the complaint to civil authorities; a board then commissioned an independent investigation that ended in Kaucheck leaving.

LAKE ORION: Drowning victim identified as Orion Twp. teen

A teen who drowned Saturday on Lake Orion after falling out of a pontoon has been identified as Jonathan E. Harper of Orion Township.

Lake Orion Police Chief Jerry Narsh said Harper, 19, was on the boat with four friends. He was holding onto a ladder, and reached over the side to grab something floating in the water. Harper, who wasn't wearing a life jacket, tumbled into the water. The ladder fell behind him and became entangled with his feet. His friends jumped into the water and tried to rescue him.

Narsh said a couple boating nearby got Harper into their boat. He was pronounced dead at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital.
