The victim of a notorious pedophile priest says she's finally found closure after winning the largest settlement for an individual sexual abuse case in Canadian history, almost $1.75 million.

"It means a lot to me that this chapter is done in my life, and I can move on," said Lou Ann Soontiens, 53, of Chatham, Ont.

Lawyers for Soontiens announced that the London, Ont., diocese of the Roman Catholic Church has agreed to pay her $1,745,000 plus legal costs in lieu of going to trial.

Soontiens had launched a lawsuit against the diocese due to years of childhood rape and sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of Father Charles Sylvestre. The trial was set to begin on Monday.
