Seems that the Rev. Alberto Cutie', the celebrity Florida priest who got caught canoodling on the beach with his girlfriend, is not going to leave the priesthood quietly -- though it does appear that his mind is made up about leaving the priesthood. He's apparently given a pretty heated TV interview about his situation, one in which he showed no humility, only outrage at the church. Miami Herald columnist Myriam Marquez agrees with Cutie's view that the Catholic church should have married priests, but she's pretty sick of Cutie'. Excerpt:

My sympathy for his inner struggle so boldly displayed -- tell me he didn't really want to get caught? -- has morphed into disgust. Cutie could have said all that he said without the attitude and certainly without the collar. He could have said that he is contemplating joining the Episcopalian Church while the Catholic hierarchy figures out what to do about priests and marriage (not in our lifetime, I'm afraid).

Instead, he acted like a victim who had no control over his pants, er, priestly robes. He showed little empathy or respect for those who embrace church teachings without question. Just sinful pride.

Please, take off the collar, sir. Go snuggle with your main squeeze, pray, have kiddies.

Just get a new life.

I too would like to see Catholic priests have the option to marry, as they once did. But look, if you're going to break your vow of celibacy, accept the fault yourself, and don't blame it on the Church, which didn't force you to take that vow. It's like a teenager who got caught breaking a promise blaming Mom for making him promise something he couldn't fulfill. Not impressive.
