MORE than €140m has so far been paid out in compensation to the victims of abuse in residential institutions.

The €140m relates to the end of 2007 and it is expected to have been exceeded by several million since then.

At the end of last year the Residential Institutions Redress Board had received 14,594 applications for compensation.

At that point, it had completed 12,482 cases and the average award was €64,230, while the largest payout was €300,000.

The largest portion of awards was in the €50,000 to €100,000 category, while more than one-third were for less than €50,000.

The board is expected to give up-to-date figures shortly on the Compensation Bill.

By the end of last year, it had paid out legal costs of €129m to 774 firms.
