A look at the schools and institutions where vulnerable children were subjected to abuse over the years.

Artane Industrial School:

The largest in the country. Founded in 1870 and built for 830 boys Best known for the Artane boys band. Sexual abuse a "chronic problem".

Marlborough House Detention Centre, Dublin:

Managed by the Department of Education. Boys awaiting transfer to reformatories were sent here and left for long hours with no recreation facilities, no schooling and no proper supervision.

Goldenbridge:

The subject of television and radio programmes and of a great deal of media coverage. A grim institution where children were seriously neglected and where inadequate staffing deprived them of proper care.

Carrigalee Park Industrial School Dun Laoghaire:

Opened in 1894 and closed in 1954. Few complaints, but harsh, punitive regime.

St Joseph's School for the Deaf, Cabra:

Residential school for boys from the age of eight and the final Christian Brothers School investigated. Disturbing levels of sexual abuse and peer sexual activity amongst boys who were resident there. Abuse and physical punishment continued into the mid-1990s.

Letterfrack Industrial School , Connemara:

Christian Brothers-run school. Bleak, inhospitable and isolated from families of pupils. Pervaded by a climate of fear. Sexual abuse a chronic problem throughout its history.

Daingean Reformatory Co Offaly:

Owned by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. A cruel regime of punishment with boys suffering extreme violence. Children were brutalised, flogged and suffered ritualised beatings. The report described a lawless, prison-like culture with little effective supervision and gangs of older boys imposing their rules and sexually abusing younger, weaker boys.

St Joseph's Industrial school, Tralee:

Set up in 1862 for 145 boys. One Brother who was violent and dangerous to children over a number of years at another institution was moved to Tralee, where he went on to terrorise other children over seven years.

St Patrick's Industrial School, Upton, Cork:

Run by the Rosminians. Files from the order's archive in Rome revealed seven clerics from this one school were known sex abusers.

Greenmount Industrial School, Co Cork:

Presentation Brothers ran this school with a harsh and severe regime with physical abuse. and two Brothers in particular who sexually abused youngsters and went on to attack other children.
