The Tanaiste is refusing to be drawn on the possibility of a review of the redress scheme for victims of child abuse at state institutions.

The compensation bill for thousands of victims is set to exceed ˆ1bn, 90% of which will be paid by the tax payer.

Religious orders have already paid out ˆ128m but are now exempt from any future liability under a controversial deal made in 2002.

The Government is to hold a special meeting to consider the findings of yesterday's Ryan report, and a two-day Dail debate will take place next month.

But Tanaiste Mary Coughlan has refused to say whether or not the redress scheme will be looked at.
