Archbishop of Tuam, Dr. Michael Neary, has apologised unreservedly for the failure of the Church to protect children in light of the latest child abuse report.

In a statement, Archbishop Neary says the report by the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse, makes for "sad and disturbing reading".

Dr. Michael Neary says he is particularly "ashamed" as Archbishop of Tuam of the abuse that occurred in Letterfrack and Clifden.

The Archbishop is also appealling for forgiveness from those who suffered and says it's essential that the recommendations of the Ryan report are implemented.

Archbishop Neary says he is fully committed to implementing best practice in terms of safe guarding children in the pastoral care of the church.
