An evangelist who is credited with converting the president of Uganda and his wife to born-again Christians, is being accused of sexual abuse.

Pastor Robert Kayanja, this week was alleged to have forced two teenage boys in his congregation to have anal sex with him. Sodmy is punishable by life in prison in Uganda.

The boys were encouraged by other pastors who learned of their plight to file an official complaint with police, which they did.

The scandal has caused a furore in Uganda with local newspapers dedicating their front pages to the scandal.

However on Wednesday police detained the two boys and later in the day issued a statement saying the boys had withdrawn their allegations.

Rather than smothering the story however, the announcement that the allegations had been recanted, sent the media into a further spin, alleging presidential interference in the case.

Five pastors who said they had counselled the boys and suggested they file a complaint, said the boys were placed under pressure to withdraw their complaint.

A spokesman for Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni denied the president had become involved.

"The president does not condone any interference with the due process of law and directs that all members of government not involved with the investigations or prosecution desist from any interference," Museveni's press secretary Tamale Mirundi said Thursday.
