FINE Gael's Richard Bruton yesterday expressed horror at the catalogue of cruelty uncovered in the Ryan report and said failures by the State and Government were continuing.

The deputy leader's comments were echoed by other members of the Opposition.

Mr Bruton added the report showed an appalling litany of abuse to which the State had turned a blind eye. He said the State was still failing children and presiding over a system of failures on childcare.

Shocking

Labour leader Eamon Gilmore said the report was shocking in its revelations about a shameful period in Irish history. The Department of Education had colluded and destroyed lives, he said.

Mr Gilmore said he was surprised by the way the Government was responding and said it had to be shamed into sending a representative onto the 'Morning Ireland' radio programme.

He called on the Government to reverse a ˆ2m cut to the Residential Institutions Redress Board. And he criticised the indemnity deal signed between Church and State.

The Labour leader said the taxpayer has had to pick up a ˆ1.2bn bill while religious orders were capped at ˆ127m.

Sinn Fein TD Caoimhghin O Caolain said the report amounted to "a sickening litany of abuse and exploitation". But he said child abuse was not confined to decades past and continued to this day.
