NEW YORK, NY May 22, 2009 —The Connecticut Supreme Court has ruled that most sealed court files detailing sexual abuse allegations by priests in the Diocese of Bridgeport should be released.

The high court ruled today that the documents should be unsealed, with limited exceptions. The files concern allegations of sexual abuse by as many as 23 priests in cases settled in 2001.

More than 12,000 documents have been under seal since that settlement. New York's retired archbishop, Edward Egan, was a bishop of the Bridgeport Diocese in the 1990s.
