A report by Ireland's independent Commission to Inquire Into Child Abuse has heard about a lesbian nun, responsible for looking after children as young as six months, who was so drunk on one occasion that she fell into a playpen of children, landing on one of them.

It's alleged that the woman in question, Nora Wall [pictured], also known as Sister Callida, went on trips with her nun lover, leaving the children with a 20 year old, and would disappear for days at a time without notice or contact details. It's also alleged that two other nuns who were told to keep an eye on her ended up in lesbian relationships with her.

According to Herald.ie, Wall managed a Sisters Of Mercy group care home from 1978 to the 1990s when she was removed. She was responsible for some 16 children aged between six months to 16 years. The commission found Wall unpredictable and irrational, that she bullied staff, beat the children, drank to excess and put children at risk by leaving junior staff in charge.

The report has uncovered a range of scandalous happenings at the home – parties the nuns held, men staying overnight, older boys sexually assaulting younger boys and regular drinking in front of the children. Wall was also convicted for the rape of a 10 year old girl in 1999, but this was later quashed by an appeal in 2005 due to evidence from an unreliable witness.

The report found that rape was widespread in more than 250 Irish-Catholic care institutions from the 1930s to the 1990s, and that the church protected paedophiles from prosecution.

According to The Catholic News Service, the report found that some nuns denied water to bed-wetting children in the evenings, and some became so thirsty that they drank from toilet bowls. At one Dublin school a boy soiled himself and was forced to eat his own faeces by a Christian brother. Children were found to be underweight, living in crowded conditions, regularly beaten, and girls as young as 8 were being raped. Children were punished with rubber from pram wheels, fists, finger nails and fan belts, one child even had their hand held in boiling water. Punishment was administered for things the children couldn't help, like being left handed or having worn out shoes.

According to Reuters, no-one will be prosecuted as a result of the nine-year investigation.
