	Arlene Suspect Spent Three Years in 'Sadistic' School Derry Journal May 29, 2009 http://www.derryjournal.com/journal/Arlene-suspect-spent-three-years.5314107.jp The chief suspect in the disappearance of a Co Tyrone teenager who went missing after a night out in Donegal spent three years as a teenager in a "cruel and sadistic" Irish industrial school, it has been revealed.Convicted murderer and rapist Robert Howard was sent to St Joseph's Industrial School, Ferryhouse, Clonmel, in 1956 after being found guilty of burglary. Last week, in the Child Abuse Commission's report that has rocked Ireland, Justice Sean Ryan said the punishment at the Tipperary school where Howard spent three years was delivered in a "cruel, sadistic and excessive manner designed to maximise the terror of all the boys." Howard (65) is the chief suspect in the 1994 disappearance of Castlederg teenager Arlene Arkinson. The 15-year-old went missing after attending a disco in Ballybofey. Howard, who has a 40-year history of child abuse and rape, and is currently serving a life sentence for the horrific murder of London teenager Hannah Williams, was living in Castlederg in 1994 and was the last person to see Arlene alive. He was cleared in June 2005 of Arlene's murder. The jury at his trial in Belfast were not told of his previous convictions, a decision that outraged Arlene's family.
