RELIGIOUS institutions where thousands of boys and girls were raped and beaten in Ireland should be closed down, Ian Paisley has said.

And Dr Paisley has called for the possessions and savings of the abusers to be offered to their victims as compensation.

Mr Paisley blasts more than 250 church-run centres for inflicting decades of abuse on children.

High Court Justice Sean Ryan unveiled the 2,600-page report of Ireland's Commission to Inquire Into Child Abuse last week, based on interviews with thousands of former students.

More than 30,000 youngsters deemed to be petty criminals or from dysfunctional families were sent to Ireland's harsh network of industrial schools, reformatories, orphanages and hostels from the 1930s until the last church-run facilities shut in the 1990s.

The shock report found abuse including beatings and molestation was rife in the facilities, chiefly run by the Christian Brothers order.

Dr Paisley says: "It is not unreasonable to expect that the religious orders responsible for the crimes should now, with immediate effect, be disbanded.

"All that they own should become available for compensation to the victims."
