	Brother Dax Hated Boys from Limerick By Petula Martyn Limerick Leader May 30, 2009 http://www.limerickleader.ie/news/Brother-Dax-hated-boys-from.5312472.jp ONE of the most sadistic Christian Brothers at the notorious industrial school in Letterfrack, Co Galway had a "bizarre prejudice against boys from County Limerick", according to the report by the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse. The Brother, who is given the pseudonym Br Dax in the report, was convicted in 2003 of sexually abusing 25 former pupils, some of whom gave evidence to the investigation committee. Boys from Limerick were singled out for physical punishment by the Brother who did not explain his irrational hatred for them. He admitted that if he lost his temper he hit boys with whatever he had in his hands and that he could have drawn blood on such occasions. His reign of terror lasted the entire time he lived in Letterfrack from the late 1950s to mid-1970s. Br Dax accepted in cross-examination that it was possible that he would have walked up behind them and struck them on the back of the head just to get their attention. The Brother was feared by young boys more for his reputation as a sex abuser than for the indiscriminate physical attacks on the children at the infamous County Galway Industrial School. Br Dax told the committee that he started sexually abusing children approximately six months after his arrival in the School. He said it started 'with immodest touching, eventually leading to buggery'. Br Dax was unable to explain why he raped some boys rather than others, other than to say that it was simply a matter of convenience for him. He simply abused the children that he had regular contact with. He told the committee that he would often keep boys behind after work for the express purpose of abusing them and accepted that he would have raped some boys once or maybe twice a week for a prolonged period of time.
