ALBANY -- The Brooklyn bishop who's threatening to close churches and schools in districts of lawmakers backing a sex-offender law might be risking his diocese's tax-exempt status, the legislation's sponsor said yesterday.

Assemblywoman Margaret Markey (D-Queens) said Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio has pushed the political envelope with his vehement opposition to her bill, which would make it easier for people sexually assaulted as kids to sue.

"He's on the borderline of jeopardizing his not-for-profit status" by openly politicking, she said. "If I were the bishop, I would walk very cautiously."

Markey noted that DiMarzio actively campaigned for her Republican opponent last fall. But a spokesman for DiMarzio said her accusations are unfounded.

"The inaccuracies here are legion," said the Rev. Kieran Harrington. "Where's the evidence that we actively campaigned against her? She's lying."
