VERO BEACH — Police say they added 32 new charges of child-pornography possession Wednesday against pastoral counselor Gerard Lamothe, a week after arresting him on one initial charge.

Police arrested Lamothe, 60, of Vero Beach, a former Catholic priest who is married with 11 children, shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday at his business, Pastoral Counseling Center, of the 3000 block of Airport Drive West.

Lamothe was later booked at the Indian River County Jail on $160,000 bail.

Vero Beach police began the investigation Feb. 13, when a deliveryman reported looking through a window into a darkened office at the Pastoral Counseling Center and seeing what appeared to be child pornography on a computer screen.

Police seized Lamothe’s office computer for forensic examination by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Reports show the initial search found 45 images of child pornography and 19 erotic images of youth, both in pictures and short videos.

Wednesday’s additional charges follow a further review of the other images to confirm whether all the youths in them were younger than age 18, police say.

Police reports say Lamothe admitted to browsing the Internet for pornography, but said he doesn’t know how the child pornography police found got on his office computer.

Lamothe told police he believed someone else got into his office and used his computer without his knowledge.
