Woman comes forward after hearing of arrest

Baltimore police have filed new sex abuse charges against a former church deacon who was arrested last month on charges that he sexually assaulted a minor.

Curtis Allen, 48, who was a deacon at Bethel El Temple Church of Christ in Northwest Baltimore, has been charged with third- and fourth-degree sex offenses and related counts and is accused of sexually abusing a teenage girl in 1990, court records show.

The alleged victim, a woman who is now in her 30s, came forward with accusations after seeing news coverage of Allen's arrest in May, according to Officer Troy Harris, a police spokesman.

Allen was taken into custody May 20 after a boy, now 17, said he had been abused by Allen between September 2004 and December 2005 when he was 13 and 14 years old. Police said those incidents occurred at the deacon's house, which was a few blocks from the church, between morning and evening services.

The youth said Allen woke him up from a nap and sodomized him, then told the boy he was kidding around and instructed him not to tell anyone what had happened or they would both get in trouble. The boy said he didn't tell anyone because Allen was a respected member of the church.

Allen, of the 5200 block of Cuthbert Ave., was charged with 13 counts of sex abuse and related charges in connection with those accusations.

He was released on $250,000 bail two days after that arrest. He is being held on the new charges, awaiting a bail review that will likely occur this morning.

Harris said the investigation remains open, and police have not ruled out the possibility of more victims.

Anyone with information is being asked to call the Police Department's sex offense unit at 410-396-2076.
