Haitian Roman Catholic priest Enel Almeus is expected to face a judge and jury today, five years after being committed to stand trial for rape.

Almeus is being represented by Senior Counsel Desmond Allum and attorney John Heath, while Senior Counsel Israel Khan has been granted a fiat to prosecute.

When the matter was called yesterday before Justice Andre Mondesir, a nine-member jury was selected. Khan is expected to make his opening statements today.

Almeus is charged with raping and assaulting a woman in her mid-thirties.

The priest was charged by Cpl Emrol Bruce of the Port of Spain Criminal Investigations Department.

The offences allegedly took place in Port of Spain.

Reports stated Almeus allegedly had sex without the woman's consent on March 19 and illegally assaulted her on March 16, 2004.
