AUSTIN - Bishop Gregory Aymond said Tuesday that after a private inquiry into statements made by the murderer of an Austin priest concerning a romantic relationship between the two men, he is unable to verify whether or not those statements are true. During his confession, Manuel Martin Torres-Saldana told investigators he killed Father Jesse Euresti because the priest was trying to end their one-year sexual relationship. In response to questions from reporters, Aymond, of the Diocese of Austin, promised to look into the allegations.

In a press release Tuesday, Aymond said that those closest to the priest denied the allegations and that there would be no further elaboration on the matter.

Euresti was stabbed to death on March 31 by the caretaker of the retirement home he'd bought in Nueveo Laredo, Mexico. Father Jesse's body was found almost a week later, dumped on the side of a Mexican highway.
