The Diocese of Austin said this morning that an investigation did not reveal a sexual relationship between Father Jesse Euresti, the former pastor of Cristo Rey Catholic Church in East Austin, and his confessed killer.

Bishop Gregory Aymond promised an investigation after Manuel Martin Torres-Saldana, who was recently sentenced to 37 and a half years in a Mexican prison, claimed he and the priest were lovers.

"I am unable to verify the truth of Torres-Saldana's statement," Aymond said in a statement. "Therefore, it is appropriate that we remember in gratitude Father Euresti's 44 years of priestly ministry."

Torres-Saldana said he stabbed Euresti to death in the Nuevo Laredo home the two men shared and dumped his body his body on the outskirts of the border city. Torres-Saldana was arrested several days later in the southern state of Chiapas.

Euresti's family members have denied Torres-Saldana's claim of an inappropriate relationship and said the man served as the caretaker of Euresti's Nuevo Laredo home.

Church officials said they would have no further comment on the investigation.
