Northern KZN detectives have their hands full trying to get to the bottom of a case that has outraged community members at Newcastle. A 48-year old priest appeared in court yesterday on suspicion that he raped and sodomised 15 young children.

He served as a priest at a local church and stands accused of abusing boys who are aged between four and 14. He was arrested last month after one of the children told his parents about what was going on.

Police spokesperson Shooz Magudulela says the priest asked the court not to release him yet - even though he had appeared yesterday for a bail application. He claims that the man fears for his life as he has received threats from the community.

"He is looking for an alternative accommodation that is going to be at 'Maritzburg. He's going to go back on the 14th of July so he can apply for bail again."

Magudulela says they believe more children may have been victimised.

"It might happen that around the vicinity where this guy was operating, more children have been abused. An appeal is made by the police here in Newcastle for all the parents to actually have interviews with their kids".
