NAIROBI (AFP) — Kenyan police said Wednesday they had launched an investigation into allegations that a sexagenarian Italian Roman Catholic priest sexually abused children in his care over a period of 20 years.

The case surfaced when a Kenyan television channel earlier this week carried allegations by purported victims and relatives against Father Renato "Kizito" Sesana, a well-known figure in the east African country.

"We have seen the case in the media... Investigations have been launched to ascertain the allegations. It is a serious matter," deputy police spokesman Charles Owino Wahongo told reporters.

He said the police had not received any formal complaints yet.

The missionary, a former journalist who still keeps a blog and has ties with southern Sudan, held a press conference late Tuesday to deny the allegations.

"I have not and I have never sodomised any child ever in Kenya or anywhere else. Let me state very clearly that I am ready to face anybody who can prove to the contrary," he said.

The priest said the allegations were fabricated by "people who are out to malign my name. These are people who are out to take over my properties."
