An 80-year-old Legio Maria sect priest defiled a Standard Three girl inside a church then threatened to kill her if she reported the act.

The preacher was yesterday jailed for life by a Siaya court.

Ignacio Pitalis Agunda was sentenced to life imprisonment for defiling an orphan who went to worship at his church.

Siaya Resident Magistrate Samson Temu found the octogenarian guilty of defiling the girl inside the prayer room at Boro Legio Maria church, on July 9, 2007.

Temu said the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and called for a stiff sentence for the offence.

But the man protested claiming he was framed.

Court cells

"My clansmen are out to finish me," the man shouted as he was whisked to the court cells to begin his sentence.

His argument was strongly supported by his wife, who earlier told the court she and her husband had not had conjugal contact for long.

The court had heard that Agunda lured the minor, then in Standard Three, into the prayer chamber where he sprinkled "holy water" on her, then proceeded to defile her.

The girl testified that Agunda then warned her he would kill her if she told anybody what had transpired.

A doctor who examined the girl confirmed she had been defiled and infected with a sexually transmitted disease.

In his mitigation, Agunda told the court he had been sexually inactive for many years and there was no way he could have defiled the minor.
