Pope Benedict XVI called on Thursday for a "frank and complete acknowledgment" of the "weaknesses" of priests and denounced those who did not honor their vows. It was the pope's first statement on such matters since a state-appointed commission in Ireland last month reported "endemic" sexual and physical abuse in church-run residential schools there from the 1930s to the 1990s, when the last of the institutions closed. Benedict's letter to priests worldwide did not specifically acknowledge abuse scandals, but it spoke of "situations which can never be sufficiently deplored where the church herself suffers as a consequence of infidelity on the part of some of her ministers."
