KENYA — Five boys who have accused Catholic priest Fr Renato Kizito Sesana of sexual abuse have recorded statements with police.

Consequently, police are expected to summon Kizito.

The boys recorded statements at CID headquarters last week, in the company of their lawyer Stephen Kibunja.

Sources at the Serious Crimes Unit where the boys lodged their complaint said the officers expect to call Kizito either today or Monday.

"It is true the complaint is with us and there is a team pursuing the case. He will be summoned for grilling anytime," said a senior officer.

Deputy Police Spokesman Charles Wahong'o also added they expect progress in the case from today.

"The boys' statements are being analysed before we move into action anytime from tomorrow (today)," he said.

Yesterday, Mr Kibunja said he expects to see the prelate in court due to the seriousness of the matter.

"The question puzzling the boys is why is Fr Kizito still a free man?" said Kibunja.

"The boys have made formal complaints with the police. They were the ones who filed the report," he added.

He said when the victims recorded their statements, the priest was out of the country.

"The police recorded statements from the boys and even promised that they would apply for an international warrant of arrest against the priest, who was then in Italy," he added.

Withdraw help

In one of the affidavits seen by The Standard, a 17-year-old boy claims the priest sexually abused him and warned him that he would cut off financial assistance should he spill the beans.

The boy said he joined Kivuli centre, a shelter home ran by the priest for orphans and poor boys from single parents at the tender age of 11.

"I remember an incident in 2006 when Fr Kizito, whom I now understand is known as Fr Renato Sesana, ordered me to remove my clothes to see if I was circumcised," the victim said in his affidavit.
