ST. CHARLES - The director of children's programs at the First Baptist Church of St. Charles has resigned after authorities began investigating him on suspicion of child pornography, Senior Pastor David Sheppard said today.

The man has not been arrested but detectives with the St. Charles County Sheriff's Department seized his computer Friday at the church, 2701 Muegge Road, Sheppard said. The man worked part time running children's programs at the church for 4 1/2 years. Sheppard said authorities also seized the man's home computer.

Sheriff's Lt. Craig McGuire would not confirm or deny whether the department is investigating the man.

Sheppard said he gave deputies permission Friday to take the man's work computer and that he has no indication any children at the church were involved.

Sheppard said he told the congregation about the situation during two services Sunday. Sheppard said he would have fired the man had he not chosen to resign.

"We are trying to deal with this in a responsible way, not covering anything up," he said. "This is devastating. I deal with these things openly and honestly."

The man was not an ordained minister and had worked for the church running children's programs, Bible school and evening youth services, Sheppard said. He has spoken to the man's family, who are members of the church.

"They're one of the finest families in the church," Sheppard said. "They are totally devastated about this."

Sheppard said the church had conducted a background check on the man and found no criminal history.
