President McAleese is to meet with survivors of institutional abuse at Aras an Uachtarain today.

The President will meet with some 300 survivors at this afternoon's meeting.

Speaking at a rally in Dublin earlier this month, John Kelly, Survivors of Child Abuse in Ireland, said: “This will have great significance because you were denied your constitutional rights as a child, you were valued as a child, the constitution didn’t mean anything,” he said.

“Now finally the state is saying we cherish you as adults. That is very important to us.”

President McAleese said this week that the abusive conduct of priests, nuns and brothers in residential institutions “is a matter which demands forensic probing and explanation.”

Speaking at an event to mark the UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture in TCD last week, she said the Ryan report demanded “a fresh focus from all of us as a civic society on what we need to do to truly cherish the children of this nation equally”.
