The Vatican has appointed a Spanish bishop to investigate the Legionaries of Christ in Ireland and other European countries, writes Kieron Wood.

The founder of the Catholic congregation, Fr Marcial Maciel, who died last year, was ordered by Pope Benedict to spend his final years in prayer and penance after being accused of sexual abuse and of fathering one or more children.

The Legionaries of Christ set up their first Irish house in Bundoran, Co Donegal, in 1960. Two years later, they opened a novitiate in Malahide, Co Dublin.

The novitiate moved to Leopardstown, Co Dublin, in 1968. The Legion also founded two language academies, and opened Oakhill School in Dublin in 2000.

The Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, and other ranking officials of the Roman Curia, met five bishops last week to discuss the formal investigation of the Legionaries, known as an apostolic visitation.

Bishop Ricardo Blazquez Perez of Bilbao will run the investigation in Ireland and other European countries, apart from Italy.

Bishop Ricardo Watti Urquidi of Tepic, Mexico, has been assigned to report on the work of the Legionaries in Mexico; Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver, on the US and Canada; Bishop Ricardo Ezzati Andrellof of Concepcion, Chile,on South America; and Bishop Giuseppe Versaldi of Alejandria, Italy, on Italy, Israel, the Philippines and South Korea.

The visitation will begin on August 15, and the five prelates will report back to the Holy See.
